While everyone knows what casual fishing is, the word deep sea fishing throws a few people off. If you also don’t know what this type of fishing is, then worry not because we are here to help.

Deep Sea Fishing is fishing done far away on the deep shores of water – specifically the Atlantic Ocean. Fishers often sail out into the ocean on boats in groups and show off their fishing skills in water that should be at least 100 feet deep.

Now that you have a vague idea about deep-sea fishing, you’d want to know some of the best fish to catch in Punta Cana. If that is the case, the next section of our article has got you covered!

What You Should Expect to Catch in Deep Sea Fishing Punta Cana?

Punta Cana is a beautiful town full of exotic beaches and waterline that stretches far and wide. Deep sea fishing Punta Cana stands out the most among its many exceptional water recreational activities. With the Atlantic in the North and East and the Caribbean in the South, the ocean in Punta Cana holds some world-class fish for you to catch. Some fantastic catches you should look out for are mentioned below:

1. Blue and White Marlin

If there is one fish experienced fishers come to Punta Cana in mind to catch, it for sure has to be Marlin. The white marlins start showing up first. They open the season in March and stay in the deep waters till the end of June. The White Marlins weigh approximately 150 pounds and are declared the younger cousins of the Blue Marlins, which come soon after.

The Blue Marlins start appearing in the month of June and stay in the waters till October. These fishes are 15 feet long and weigh approximately 1000 pounds. Hence, rolling them in would require immense strength and exceptional skills. The Marlins, however, are intelligent creatures, so they steer clear of boats. This is why catching one is a massive achievement in the fishing world.

2. Sailfish and Swordfish

Considering that the Punta Cana waters are perfect for various fishes, it shouldn’t come as a surprise when we name sailfish and Swordfish among the list.

While Swordfish are more summer-friendly, unlike Marlins and Swords, sailfish only appear in the winter months.

Catching a sailfish in the Dominican is considered an enormous achievement, and why shouldn’t it be? Who doesn’t want to outclass one of the fastest fishes in the world, right? Moreover, these speedy fishes make catching them a task, and hence one reason people take pride when they land one of these.

The Swordfish, on the other hand, is a different story. These fishes are available in a bundle during August and September. So, if you can head over to the shores during these months, look out for these bad boys.

Mahi Mahi and WahoSource: @bombchelle_fishing

When talking about the deep sea fishing in the Dominican, we can never leave the bread and butter of Punta Cana out of the list. The Mahi Mahi and Wahoo are the most incredible fish to catch all year. Both fishes are excellent for eating and make your deep fishing experience one that you’d never forget.

The Mahi Mahi is available in both big and small sizes. If you are someone who is heading out to fish with your family and plan on catching some fish for dinner. Then we suggest you hit the reef for a smaller, dinner-friendly Mahi Mahi.

If you want to name a bigger beast to yourself, then the open ocean is where you should venture out.

Unlike the rest of the Caribbean, Wahoo is available in the waters of the Dominican all year long. However, the best time to go after a Wahoo is between October and March. For smaller and dinner-appropriate Wahoo, heading towards the reef is advisable again.

Wahoos are easily enticed by living bait, so catching them will not be challenging.

4. Yellowfin Tuna

The Yellowfin Tuna is another A-lister on the fishing list. The fishes are available in hefty amounts during the months of March to August. The trophy sizes Tuna weigh up to 400 pounds and are 8 feet in length. The bigger ones are relatively easy to catch; their smaller counterparts (10-90 lbs.) put up a big fight. The smaller fishes are known to dive deep when roped in; hence, pulling them back onto the surface can be pretty challenging.

Tuna usually feed on the water’s surface, so the best way to bait them is through a troll. Use silicon octopi or some live bait to lure them in, and then put in some effort to roll the bad boys out.

These fishes are an all-time favorite in the Dominican, so catching them should always be a priority.

Conclusion

Deep sea fishing in Punta Cana should always be on your list of activities while in town. You don’t necessarily have to be a pro angler to enjoy this activity. The experience will be phenomenal, and even if you don’t get your hands on a catch, the serene view and efforts you’d put in will make it all worth it. We hope this guide to what the best fishes to catch in Punta Cana helped you out in making the most of your deep sea fishing Punta Cana experience.
